236 Brunswick Street is a highly significant three storey shop row built in 1888, designed by John Beswicke. The Brunswick Street Heritage Overlay Area was among the first of Fitzroy's streets to develop commercially. The building now houses various creative studios & shops. The building was in need of maintenance and remedial work, including reroofing and replacement of a fire stair at the rear. Substantial documentation was required to satisfy the requirements of the Heritage Department, as well as careful management of the engineering component. Connections to the existing building required detailed work, with existing plumbing & guttering that had to be worked around. The roof was redone with a galvanised steel that would mellow in colour with time, to suit heritage materials.
